The Homeopathic Consultation:
by Lauren Feder, M.D.

What can I expect from a visit to a homeopath?
As a classical homeopathic physician, I spend approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours for the first visit with a child or adult. During this comprehensive interview, I am interested in gathering a great many details about your (or your child's) current condition, medical complaints, past history, lifestyle, mental and emotional attitudes, past traumas, character and other relevant information.

Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the father of homeopathy wrote, "A single symptom is no more the whole disease than the single foot is of a man." My goal is to choose a remedy that matches the person's totality of symptoms, not just the main diagnosis. In other words, if 5 patients come to my office with a diagnosis of eczema they might all be treated with a different homeopathy remedy. Each person is treated as an individual. A properly chosen remedy stimulates the body to heal itself and strengthen the constitution so that one can live life to the best of his or her potential. One remedy is used at a time, as constitutional treatment can have a profound effect on a physical, mental and emotional level.

What lifestyle changes must I make?
The homeopath usually gives very little advice about life-style, exercise, diet, etc. This is because we want to see how the remedy is affecting you. A properly chosen remedy will improve your health and strengthen your constitution. Positive changes will begin to permeate all aspects of your life, and as a result you will start to make healthier choices.

During the time period that you are taking a remedy, it is best to avoid coffee, chocolate, camphor, euclyptus, mint and other strong smelling substances (mint toothpase is okay). They can weaken or antidote the remedy.
